The advances of the Mobile Phone

The mobile phone industry in the UK has advanced enormously from the days of bricks and yuppies, which were to the 1980`s what shellsuits became to the 1990`s… Indeed, owning a mobile phone nowadays is as much a fashion statement as it is a practical necessity, so the calls for more streamlined technology has pushed both designs and technical specifications to all new highs. Nevertheless, this article will focus on the top 10 mobile phones of all time, in no particular order, which will invariably include the odd brick or two!

The Nokia 3310, which was released in 2000, is a dual band GSM900/1800 mobile phone featuring voice activated dialling, lengthy SMS text space, reminder, alarm, calculator and stop watch. It also comprised 4 popular games including Snake II, which was extremely addictive if a little frustrating. Nokia sold over 126 million 3310`s, making it one of the most successful and popular releases of all time. Its robust yet functional design makes it easy to see why.

At the other end of the technology, the Apple iPhone 3G represents the cutting edge in innovative design with its 3.5 inch HVGA touchscreen and scratch-resistant glass. Compatible with Apple`s iPod technology, this phone wooed buyers with its multimedia capabilities and sleek design.

The GSM-enabled Sony Ericsson C905 can be used all over the world and, typical of the Ericsson range, it features high specification technology including an 8 megapixel camera and up to 2GB memory.

Weighing in as one of the skinniest phones around at 10.9mm, Samsung`s U600 represents incredible technology at an incredible price – in particular the 3.2 megapixel camera is of an excellent standard. Another top ten mobile phone is Samsung`s latest addition to their slimline phone range, the Tocco Ultra Edition. Although measuring 12.7mm, the phone is equipped with an impressive 8 megapixel camera, GPS, geotagging and Bluetooth 2.1! Slide phone technology had truly arrived with these excellent best-sellers.

Clamshell phones also proved something of a breakthrough in mobile phone design, and the trend for such phones started back in 1996 with Motorola`s StarTAC, which weighed only 88g and was at the time considered a showpiece device. Some years later, the Motorola V545 was a popular purchase and included some reliable features. Nevertheless, clamshell designs did not fully catch up with modern technology until the introduction of the best-selling Motorola RAZR V3, which has been superseded by the Motorola KRZR K3.

Finally, departing from the favoured clamshell mould, the Motorola Q 9h is, for want of a better description, a truly awesome phone and very much deserving of a prominent position on the top ten list. Featuring a large TFT display, full QWERTY keyboard, up to 8GB memory, 96MB RAM, 256MB Flash and a 325MHz processor among other standard functions, the Q 9h is simply… awesome!
